Blackmores Cold Combat contains a standardised extract of the herb Andrographis paniculata. In clinical trials Andrographis demonstrates an ability to assist in the treatment of colds and flu by reducing the severity and duration of symptoms such as fever, sore throat and muscular ache.

Features and benefits

  • Small tablets suitable for ease of swallowing
  • Contains standardised extract of andrographis at a dose formulated to replicate clinical trials where it was found to be effective in reducing the duration and severity of cold symptoms
  • Andrographis is effective against symptoms even if the treatment starts several days after the onset of cold/flu

How it works

Andrographis has been used to treat a wide range of parasites and microbial infections. The herb is also credited with stopping the spread of influenza in India during the 1919 epidemic. However, laboratory studies have shown no direct biocidal activity on bacteria such as Staphylococcus pseudomonas and coliform species. Laboratory investigations with a purifed andrographis compound have shown no effects against the HIV virus.

It is now thought that the mode of action of andrographis is via an effect on the immune response rather than specific antimicrobial activity. This effect on immune response is thought to be mediated via the adrenal glands. The major active component of andrographis is a group of diterpenoid lactones called andrographolides. The major lactone is andrographolide which is very bitter - in fact, the common name for andrographis in English is chiretta, or the king of bitters, and the herb has been used as a replacement for quinine in the treatment of malaria. While the andrographolides have no antibacterial activity, andrographolide has been shown to inhibit aggregation of blood platelets induced by platelet-activating factor, which probably explains its anti-inflammatory effect in colds and other inflammatory conditions.

Adults - Take 2 tablets 3 times daily, or as professionally prescribed

Children (from 6 years to 12 years) - Take 1 tablet twice a day with meals.
