There are lots of common questions about Elevit so we've put together a list that will give you the answers you are looking for.
- What is Elevit?
ELEVIT is a vitamin and mineral supplement for pregnancy which is based on a clinical study.
- Why would Elevit be recommended above other supplements?
Elevit has been specifically designed so you can be confident of its benefits. Other supplements may contain herbal ingredients that may not have been tested in pregnancy. In some supplements there may be insufficient levels of key nutrients, such as iron for example.
- How is Elevit different to other pregnancy multivitamins?
Many of the pregnancy supplements available in Australia are basic multivitamins that have been slightly adjusted for pregnancy. In contrast Elevit is based on a formulation that has been clinically proven to reduce neural tube defects in a large, statistically significant clinical trial - the Czeizel study. Elevit has relatively higher levels of certain key vitamins and minerals, which is why it's only available from pharmacies.
- Elevit contains 800mcg of folic acid - why is this higher than others?
800mcg was the amount of folate used in the Czeizel study, which in combination with the other vitamins and minerals in the formulation showed such a significant reduction in neural tube defects, including spina bifida.1 Elevit may be more effective than folate alone in reducing birth defects such as spina bifida.6
- Are there any benefits in taking Elevit right through pregnancy?
Elevit, in conjunction with a healthy diet, helps meet the increased nutritional requirements that occur throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding. There is an increased requirement for iron during pregnancy, and Elevit can help prevent dietary iron deficiency. Likewise, there is an increased need for folate throughout pregnancy, with the majority of deficiencies occurring in the third trimester. Other vitamins and minerals that are required at higher levels throughout pregnancy include zinc, calcium, vitamin C, B6 and B12.
- How do I take Elevit
Elevit is a once-daily tablet that can be taken at anytime of the day. It is also easy to halve or crush the tablet to make it easier to swallow.
- Where do I get Elevit and how much does it cost?
Elevit is only available through pharmacies. In some states you will need to ask the pharmacist for it. The recommended retail price is $22.45 for 30 tablets or $59.95 for 100 tablets. If your local pharmacy does not yet stock Elevit, ask the pharmacist for help or call 1800 023 884 to find out where it is available.

- What if the Consumer Medicine Information (CMI) on your Elevit pack says the tablet should engraved with Roche?
Please disregard this. The tablets are not engraved with Roche anymore.
When Bayer Consumer Care acquired Roche Consumer Care, they acquired Elevit. The tablets at that point were being engraved with Roche. Since the acqusition, it has been Bayer Consumer Care's decision not to engrave the tablets. Unfortunately, however, the CMI would be an old one if it says that the tablets have Roche on them.
The CMI has recently modified after going through a lengthy approval process with the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and will now accurately reflect what the tablets currently looks like.
If you have anymore questions, please call the Consumer Care Medical Information Line on 1800 023 884
