Linotar is a range of products that have been developed specifically to treat eczema. The active ingredient in Linotar is coal tar. Linotar is prepared using a unique method that makes it very different from other tar preparations you might have tried in the past. Linotar has less odour than other tar preparations and is less likely to stain your skin, clothes or bedding.
How does Linotar work?
Coal tar – the tar found in Linotar – reduces the skin inflammation and itch that occur in eczema, and is also a mild antiseptic. Other types of tar (such as pine tar) do not reduce inflammation and only help with itch.2
When skin has been inflamed for a long period it may also become thicker than usual. Tars can help treat eczema by reducing the thickness of the outer layer of skin. This in turn allows more of the preparation to reach the inner layers of the skin.
Preparations that contain tar are recommended for treating dryness and thickened skin in chronic eczema, or for treating acute eczema after the initial flare has settled.2

Selecting the correct Linotar moisturiser
Linotar solutions do not contain any oil or fat. This oil-free formulation helps Linotar solutions penetrate the skin to reach an area where the coal tar can treat eczema effectively. The lack of oil also means that Linotar solutions do not provide moisture for the skin. Therefore, to prevent the skin from becoming dry, it is recommended that you use Linotar Lotion or Linotar Cream as a moisturiser after you have applied Linotar solution. Choose Linotar Lotion to moisturise eczema on the scalp and face, and Linotar Cream to moisturise eczema on the body.
